As a regional rescue authority, the duties of the Rescue Department in the State Provincial Office of Western Finland are
to promote a good culture of safety
to ensure the high level of the municipal rescue services
to develop and plan rescue operations
to ensure that the province has the proper managerial readiness to handle catastrophes and other exceptional situations
to coordinate regional emergency planning
to act as a state aid authority for the fire protection fund and issue their statements
to organise regional civil defence courses in co-operation with the military counties
to organise forest fire observation flights in scarcely populated areas and in co-operation with flying clubs
to handle applications for exemption from bomb shelter construction obligations.
