The duties of the Department for Social Welfare and Health Services in the State Provincial Office of Western Finland are




  • to guide and supervise social and health care services

  • to provide social and health services for municipalities and the federations of municipalities

  • to manage health centre and hospital activities

  • to provide licenses for private suppliers of social and health services and to monitor these services

  • to handle the complaints brought forward by social and health care service clients and provide them with legal protection
  • to determine causes of death and perform forensic autopsies

  • to handle state grants for foundation and development projects within the sphere of social welfare and health services

  • to provide liquor licences for serving and retailing, as well as to supervise the availability of alcohol

  • to guide and supervise health protection, as well as food and product safety

  • to guide and monitor veterinary services and animal protection

  • to track and evaluate the basic social and health services

  • to carry out proper emergency planning for the provincial social and health care units.
